The fishing on offer in Devon and Cornwall has never been better.
Amidst the beautiful local countryside there are literally dozens of prolific, un-crowded lakes, providing superb sport for the specialist and pleasure anglers alike. Be it a 30lb+ carp, or a net full of quality roach.
For the sea angler, the endless Devon and Cornish coastline offers some excellent rock and beach fishing; the Charter boats provide superb wreck and inshore reef fishing, plus specialist shark fishing; or try salt water fly-fishing for the bass. And for the game fisherman, miles of river bank and plenty of pools offer the opportunity to search out salmon, sea trout, wild brownies and grayling; or try one of the many lakes for the hard fighting brownies and rainbows. Owned and run by a fisherman, we specialise in organising fishing holidays and have endeavoured to ensure that all your needs are catered for, making your stay as “easy and relaxing” as you want it to be?
We can pre-book your permits for the duration of your stay; we know the best Skippers to book your charter boats in advance; we can pre-arrange your beats, organise Ghillies and arrange tuition (if required) and, of course, offer advice on where to fish and how to get there.
For your convenience, we can provide early breakfasts, packed lunches (varied choices) and organise dinner in the local pubs or restaurants. Or, weather permitting, fire up the BBQ and enjoy your catch over the coals with a glass of wine or a cold beer. Or, maybe you just want to chill out in our Games Lounge, take a moment to reflect on the day; cast your eye over our collection of antique rods and reels; or talk tactics for tomorrow.
There is a tackle shop and drying shed on site, freezing, smoking and packing facilities for your catch and we can arrange for your bait to be delivered here for your arrival.
And what if you fancy a change or the weather stops you fishing? We can set up the electronic clay pigeon traps and have a “friendly” competition here on the Farm. We have quality beach, boat, coarse and fly fishing tackle available to hire, if you want to try your hand at another type of fishing. And there’s always a game of pool, darts and bar football. So you’re never left twiddling your thumbs.

- Coarse Fishing
The coarse fishing in Devon and Cornwall has everything to offer; an abundance of prolific waters to suit all levels and meet all expectations, un-crowded and most set in beautiful countryside surroundings.
West Venn Cottages provides the perfect base to enjoy literally dozens of local waters. Whether your target is the "big 3" carp, tench & bream; a net full of quality roach; or a double figure mixed bag. There are over 30 lakes to choose from within 20 miles of West Venn. Giving every angler the opportunity to enjoy a different venue, every day and catch a variety of fish.
"West Venn promised and 110% delivered. Fantastic accommodation, superb hosts and always there to help. Why people pay premium prices to stay and fish in over crowded, over stocked "fishing centres", when there is so much here, and it's all arranged for you, is beyond me. Can't wait to get back"

- Game Fishing
The South West is renowned for its excellent game and fly fishing, offering the angler a huge variety and choice of fishing; at all levels. And West Venn will provide any discerning angler both a strategic and ideal place to stay.
If your quarry is a large brownie or rainbow, there are literally dozens of delightful local lakes to choose from, most set amidst glorious countryside. Many offer more than one choice of lake to test your skills. The "beginners" (or shall we say confidence booster?) lakes with fish averaging between 1lb & 3lb, to the more testing lakes that are stocked with double figure fish.
On the rivers there are so many beats, glides and pools, the game fisherman will be spoilt for choice. Whilst very much dependant on water levels for a good run of salmon, the river systems in the South West have an enviable reputation for putting more than their fair share of "the king of fish" in anglers nets, every season! The best chances of success being August through to October. In May and June, expect the larger stamp of sea trout, whilst from July onwards enjoy the prolific school peal runs. The trout can be caught all through the season, but from late April expect to see them to spring into life, with the lowland streams providing some exciting sport on the dry fly. There then, of course, follows the usual mayhem during the mayfly hatch! And with grayling regularly being caught to over 3lb, the South West and West Venn Cottages make for the perfect choice of holiday for any fly fisherman.
For your convenience, we can arrange all your beats and permits, ghillies if required. Prior to your arrival we will provide an update to the river conditions and a guide to what is being caught and what flies are taking the fish. Run by an angler for anglers, we will endeavour to exceed all your expectations. For information on the local rivers and beats, we recommend you click onto www.angling2000.org.uk

- Sea Fishing
From beach or boat, mackerel to shark; for fun or competition, as individuals or groups; the sea and coastline around Devon and Cornwall offers an abundance of different species and exciting opportunities to suit any angler's preference. And all within easy reach of West Venn Cottages.
From the beaches and rocks you can expect to catch codling, pollack, rays, turbot, bass, dogfish, flatties, gurnard, wrasse, whiting and mackerel.
Aboard the Charter boats, you will catch all of the aforementioned species, but usually much bigger! Plus, black and red bream, smoothound, conger, bull huss, some huge tope and, of course, the porbeagle and blue shark.
Most bait's will catch you fish, but around the rocks try using small crabs for the large wrasse or sandeel and jelly worms for the pollack; from the beaches use worm, peeler crab, sandeels or mackerel strips; and on the charters fresh mackerel is usually all that you need.
You can organise your own charters, or we can do it for you. Our Skippers are personally tried and tested before we organise any trips on our guest's behalf. So you can be sure of safe trip and the best the day possible. Specialist sharking and salt water fly fishing are highly recommended.
We currently use Skippers out of Clovelly (as seen in November's edition of Sea Angler), Boscastle, Bude, Padstow and Exmouth, Looe and Dartmouth.
"Following substantial development West Venn Farmhouse offers a high standard of accommodation, just the thing for angling groups and families, and is strategically located for several ports"
Dave Lewis - Sea Anger Magazine
"The best fishing, the best accommodation, the best entertainment, the best laugh. I know it sounds OTT Steve, but quite simply.it was the best. And we didn't have to do anything other than turn up!"
